Quicksand returned with Distant Populations in 2021, delivering one of the most focused and immediate records of their career. Following the acclaimed Interiors, the album pushes the band toward a leaner, more urgent sound built from tightly wound rhythms, massive guitar tones, and the unmistakable interplay between Walter Schreifels, Sergio Vega, and Alan Cage.
Across eleven songs, Distant Populations feels both unmistakably Quicksand and distinctly modern. The record moves with more speed and economy than its predecessor, balancing the band’s post-hardcore weight with sharp hooks, atmospheric detail, and the kind of tension that has defined their best work since Slip and Manic Compression.
Much of the material grew out of soundchecks, rehearsals, and improvisations recorded while Quicksand toured behind Interiors. Those fragments were later revisited and shaped into songs, preserving the chemistry and spontaneity of the band playing together while refining each idea down to its strongest form.
Produced by Will Yip and mixed by Josh Wilbur, Distant Populations captures Quicksand as a fully active band rather than a nostalgia act: forceful, inventive, and still finding new ground decades into their career.
