Garrison 'A Mile In Cold Water'

Originally released in 2000 on Revelation Records, A Mile in Cold Water is the debut full-length from Boston post-hardcore band Garrison, and one of the defining records to emerge from the late-’90s and early-2000s New England underground.

For this 2023 Iodine Recordings reissue, the album was completely remixed by Kurt Ballou of Converge at God City Studio from the original recordings and remastered by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden, bringing new clarity and weight to a record that had been out of print on vinyl for more than two decades.

Garrison came out of the same Boston-area scene as Piebald, Cave In, and Converge, blending the urgency of hardcore with the melodic tension of emo and post-hardcore. Drawing from bands like Quicksand, Drive Like Jehu, and Texas Is the Reason, they developed a sound built around intricate guitar work, sharp dynamics, heavy breakdowns, and memorable vocal melodies.

Songs like “After the Fight,” “Selective Hearing Loss,” “Always Be Closing,” “The Dumbest Angel,” “Penelope,” and “Favorite Goodbye Fuck” capture Garrison at their most distinctive, moving between angular post-hardcore, melodic punk, and quieter, more introspective moments.

The reissue is presented in a special gatefold jacket with artwork combining elements of the original release with new work from Dan McCarthy, giving one of Garrison’s most important records a definitive modern presentation.
