Struggle 'S/T'

The self-titled Struggle 7" captures the raw beginnings of the early-’90s San Diego hardcore scene, years before its members would go on to shape bands including The Locust, Swing Kids, Unbroken, Three Mile Pilot, The Black Heart Procession, Bread and Circuits, and countless other underground projects.

Formed in 1990 while its members were still teenagers, Struggle played furious, politically charged hardcore rooted in opposition to racism, consumerism, animal cruelty, abuse, and social inequality. The band’s anger was immediate and unpolished, but the restless musical ideas that would later define several corners of San Diego punk were already unmistakably present.

This four-song 7" features “Red, White, And You,” “Death of a Friend,” “Envy,” and “Pigs on Fire,” delivering fast, confrontational hardcore informed by bands like Downcast and Rorschach. Originally released by Ebullition Records, it remains one of the clearest snapshots of Struggle at their most direct and explosive.

Struggle featured Dylan Scharf on vocals, Jose Palafox on drums, Justin Pearson on bass, and guitarists Eric Allen, Tobias Nathaniel, and Cliff Cunningham. During their brief existence, the band released this self-titled 7", a 12", and a split with Undertow, while appearing alongside politically minded contemporaries including Born Against, Downcast, Bikini Kill, and Econochrist.

More than a historical curiosity, Struggle documents the point where a group of San Diego teenagers began developing ideas that would splinter into some of the most influential hardcore, screamo, punk, and experimental music of the following decade.
