Shelter 'Mantra'

After three decades since its initial release, Mantra cemented Shelter’s place as one of the most forward-thinking bands in hardcore. Mixing melody, speed, and spiritual reflection, the record stood out as a defining moment for the genre and opened the door for a more reflective and conscious side of the genre. Offered now on vinyl for the first time in over a decade, Iodine Recordings are presenting this limited exclusive pressing of Red/Orange Burning Wheel.

When Mantra first hit in 1995, Shelter stood at the crossroads of hardcore and higher consciousness. Fronted by Ray Cappo (formerly of Youth of Today) and guitarist Porcell (Youth of Today, Judge), the band channeled the explosive energy of New York’s hardcore scene into something transformative, melding breakneck riffs and singalong urgency with the introspective philosophy of Krishna Consciousness.

Mantra was Shelter’s breakthrough, a bridge between underground grit and spiritual transcendence. Released on Roadrunner Records, it introduced a generation of punk and alternative listeners to Shelter’s unique vision: raw emotion, melodic hooks, and messages of self-realization. Songs like “Here We Go,” “Message of the Bhagavat,” and “Civilized Man” distilled hardcore’s intensity into anthems of purpose and clarity, while maintaining the unfiltered spirit that defined their roots.

Three decades later, Mantra remains a landmark, a rare document of sincerity and passion from an era defined by noise and nihilism. This exclusive anniversary reissue, housed in a gatefold package with original cover art, celebrates the album’s enduring resonance. Restored for vinyl, it invites listeners old and new to rediscover Shelter’s call to consciousness: that compassion and conviction can coexist with the fire of hardcore. In a world still searching for meaning, Mantra feels more vital than ever.
