Formed in Burlington, Vermont, the band was a staple of the northeast, fitting in perfectly with fellow acts like Converge and Cave In. In Drowningman’s case, there’s a level of confidence on display in that early work that you wouldn’t hear elsewhere. They could get discordant and heavy as all hell, but finesse songs into more mellow affairs. Tracks like the standout \"Sadder Than Saturday\" show a level of songwriting that weaves between the extreme and serene. Caleb’s voice—musical and physical—are everywhere on Final Transmission. The opening title track is a voice memo of a song idea he sent to his bandmates the last time they saw each other. “Hearing his voice fucks you up a little bit,” Adam says today. “We were surprised to get it from him, actually, but we thought it was great. All told, it’s a direction that was largely spearheaded by Caleb. “When I look back at our email correspondence about the demos, Caleb had a really crystallized view of how to navigate the whole thing,” Steve reveals. “He was really digging the stuff that was spacey, heavy, a little bit weird, but with very pretty melodies and hooks. The mythology that surrounds the band is again being expanded as they careen towards some unknown future. But their refusal to stay buried reminds us of the first real trauma the band inflicted on the musical landscape: the 2006 release of Hell Songs. While they utterly baffled listeners with Canada Songs, the spastic, blunt screamo the Rhode Islanders blasted through on that breakneck debut turned out to only be a warning of how subversive, innovative, and unrepentant they could be. The opening of Hell Songs immediately became an iconic moment: Frontman Alexis Marshall crooning, I ve been called a sinner, like a fire and brimstone preacher with a flask of rotgut hidden in his Bible. And over the course of roughly 23 minutes, Marshall s vocals squirm, howl and rant over a storm of songs that eschew a traditional sense of pretty much everything. At times aurally nauseating, the guitars are piercing, anti-riffs that skitter and squeal around each other in demented patterns. And pulling them together is some of the most inventive drumming in extreme music - deconstructed, shambolic rhythms played with a virtuosic precision. It would be almost impenetrable if the songs weren't so bizarrely anthemic and obscenely addictive. We have to wait and see what s next for Daughters but right now, fuck the future. The band achieves this by deftly assembling multiple riffs and tempos in a manner that recalls Metallica's Master of Puppets. The difference, though, is that Beyond Hypothermia is much more extreme: more riffs, more tempos, and more chaos, screams, and confusion. Additionally, Cave-In draw from a wider pool of influences than Metallica could have at that point: hardcore-styled mosh grooves, evocative strains that recall Split Lip's Midwestern emo, and occasional black\/death metal riffing dance atop the traditional foundation of Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. The chugga-chugga chunks are still there, this time refined into escalating and edgy walls of sound that owe a large debt to Slayer. Newly present, however, are forays into psychedelia and noise. At times expansive and at other times dark and claustrophobic, these always aggressive ventures open new doors for Cave-In. When fused with the usual jarring assemblage of riffs, a bold and original heavy music is created. Perhaps the only band who has successfully tread similar ground is Neurosis. Until Your Heart Stops' production is a major force as well; the band's undertakings are captured and conveyed in a way that at times sound impossibly dense, balancing gut-stabbing bottom end with piercing highs. The instrumentation renders a forceful merging of massive celestial bodies, each a whirling cacophony exuding a unique sonic trembling. After digesting the lyrics in accordance, what used to sound like the swinging of a pendulum, rather depicts a birth of unintelligible base... a spectral achievement even. Nihill travels freely from one metal sub-genre to the next. The reflexive nature with which Nihill makes these connections might lead one to consider them genreless. GROND, for example, is at once: drone, doom, noise, industrial, and black metal; arriving at something resembling a sort mechanistic dark ambient more than anything else. If anything this unique need suffer comparison for the sake of cognition, Nihill's nearest contemporaries are the likes of Sunn O))), Blut Aus Nord, Death Spell Omega.
