For this release, the band worked with producer Matt Squire at Camp Street and Q-Division studios. By this time, There Were Wires had matured as song writers and constructed songs considerably longer and more intricate than anything previously written. These tracks belied much of the frenetic energy of earlier works, moving glacially at times, winding tension with extended buildups and clean vocals while still maintaining its intensity. Somnambulists was not only a dramatic departure from the punchy abruptness of their earlier sound, but a welcomed one, as well - the record was met with much acclaim from fans and critics alike. Somnambulists is a full album experience that combines heavy, droning, and bluesy riffs with atmospheric interludes. At that time, bands like Orchid, Reversal of Man, and pageninetynine were making similarly polemic music. But Jeromes Dream carved its own path and helped to define the subgenre that would come to be known as emo-violence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 2001, Jeromes Dream recorded and released their final record “Presents” before disbanding that same year. “Presents” was a deliberate departure from anything the band did previously, which included a more refined and technical sound and new vocal stylings from singer Jeff Smith. On “Presents” Jeromes Dream felt that they were creatively in uncharted territory, and embraced it throughout the writing process. It was a liberating time for the band, and they did not adhere to rules or preconceived notions as to how the album “should” sound. “Presents” was simultaneously cynical and personal, and yet still drew from the depths of their collective creative expression. Jeromes Dream development of “Presents” culminated in early 2001 when they worked with Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou at God City Studios, bringing the record to life before being released. “Presents” remains an important installation of Jeromes Dream, and a work that they remain proud of.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2018, Jeromes Dream announced that they would reunite and begin writing a new record together as a band. The response was overwhelming, with fans from all over the world hailing the reunion. Shortly after the LP release, Jeromes Dream became a fully active band again and spent the better part of the following year on tour with the likes of Loma Prieta, Gouge Away, Soul Glo, Touché Amoré, and Daughters. Before everything halted with the pandemic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAround the same time, Jeromes Dream began talks with Iodine Recordings about a “Presents” reissue on vinyl for its 20-year anniversary, shortly after the label announced its return following a 17-year hiatus. Jeromes Dream and Iodine Recordings shared a history together going back to the band’s formation in 1997 when Iodine included one of the band’s first demo tracks on the seminal “Ghost in the Gears” compilation. I grew up listening to The Clash, The Ramones, Fat Boys, RUN DMC, Black Flag and NWA. These artists defined and shaped me. They were there for me during the good times and the horrific times. Taking those inspirations with me into this place of my life and career just make sense.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMelding all those music reference points into a 12-track album of fierce and passionate anthems, Gray and his band The Iron Roses takes all the experiences of their collective lives and coalesces it into melting pot of inclusivity. “People like me (white men) have to set an example,” he says of his very conscious decision to make his band as culturally and racially inclusive as possible. “How would people in the audience experience the show if they didn’t feel represented? The Iron Roses include a trans woman, a black man, a mother of two, pansexuals, bisexuals, CIS straight folks, etc. We represent many, because it is our duty to. From the Elvis Costello-esque New Wave of “Reckoning” to the anthemic and earnest title track “Rebel Songs” (which features friend and Rise Against frontman Tim McIlrath) to balladic album closer “That Said,” Rebel Songs covers a lot of ground – musically and thematically. The reggae and hiphop-infused “Look Alive” was new ground for him. “It was the first time I ever tried adding hip-hop influences into my body of work, which was terrifying and invigorating all at once,” he explains. “It presented a perfect opportunity to add to the mix my friend Eugenius who had recently sampled one of my old band’s songs. It’s the first song on the album that shows what an insane mix of influences the rest of this album will bring - reggae, punk, hip hop… Fuck, it’s like a ‘buckle up’ moment.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut Rebel Songs isn’t a preachy album. It admits to being adrift in the feeling of aimless direction and asks for help as well. He tackles this rudderless abandon on the openly unanchored song “Lost.” “This was the first purely personal song on the album which was a huge shift from the albums prior to this,” he confesses. “It speaks to something people don’t acknowledge when speaking on social issues… It's okay to admit that you are also lost in the world, but that you are doing the best you can. It’s a personal experience we can all attach to. It’s important to hear this on an album that is socially and politically driven - being vulnerable to say ‘this is what I see, and I know I don’t have all the solutions and I’m not always right but I am doing what I can to be better.
